CONCEPT SPACE

CONCEPT SPACE

In 1982, in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture, the four concept space activities that started using a typical Nagaya-style apartment as it is are "living," "creating," "planning," and "exhibiting." We have performed the keywords in one living space, and have continued to carry out epoch-making and unique art activities with a consistent stance in the midst of various changes in the art situation. In the midst of the 1980-sized local art museums, the concept space is "Making a box in the city". The role of the museum and art space is to make a beautiful box. By holding an art museum in an extremely small "nagaya" of 4.5 tatami mats and 6 tatami mats, which is not normally thought of, the art museum and art space have the original "planning power" of what is happening there. For 40 years (2022), I have continued to play the role of art, which is a purpose and is too commonplace to plan and organize meaningful exhibitions.

We invited young artists from Europe to "Richard Serra", "Carl Andre" and "Imi Knoebel", starting with the "Roger Acking" that we have held so far. We have held exhibitions of contemporary art, such as minimal and conceptual art, where citizenship has not yet been obtained in Japan. In 1989, the concept space / R2 was expanded, and in 2006, Ais (Art Institute Shibukawa) was opened, and exhibitions are being held at the same time.

In 2020, the "200th Anniversary Exhibition" has been held, with a total of 200 exhibitions in the concept space since its inception in 1982. This exhibition was an attempt to compare Japanese classical art and contemporary art at the same time. From classical art, Rinpa designs such as "Ogata Korin", which once bears the aesthetic roots of Japan, while contemporary art is "Tomoharu Murakami", who can be said to be a master of Japanese minimal art with Japanese painting as the basis of learning. The work of was presented in the same space. It will be an exhibition that asks "the value of art" and "the meaning of art" without responding to the changes of the times, and it is suitable for an anniversary exhibition, and many people in the Nagaya space that does not change the history of the concept space and its foundation. I had you see it.
